Good Morning Britain viewers have criticized hunting lawyer Diggory Hadoke, who agreed with Norway’s decision to take down a walrus named Freya.
Rob Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins returned to GMB and at one point led a lively debate between Hadoke and Seaspiracy director Ali Tabrizi.
The pair were on opposite sides over the decision to take down walrus Freya after the controversial move was taken by Norwegian authorities.
The animal, which the British may recognize for having spent time on England’s northeast coast, is said to pose a “threat to human security” despite not attacking anyone.
Hadoke made some very strong comments after Rinder probed him for humans disrupting the walrus’ space, after people ignored requests to stay away from her.
The guest then claimed, ‘Individual animals such as these are essentially unimportant. It is a pity.’
The shocked host replied, “What did you just say?”
‘Inconsistent. Individual animals do,” Hadoke repeated. “The key issue is the sustainability of populations in the ecosystem, and sometimes when human-animal conflicts happen, people will always take on the role of protecting people.”
He reminded viewers, “They could have told anyone not to go there, and they did and they kept doing it.
“Unfortunately, the authorities have to protect stupid people,” which surprised Rinder.
“My jaw is open, I’m so shocked!” he noted, agreeing with Tabrizi: “Certainly with this logic, we can just continue shooting any animal, as long as it doesn’t endanger the entire population.
“We wouldn’t choose this with any other animal, so why do we choose it here?”
Many viewers were quick to respond to the comments, with one sharing on Twitter: “Diggory Hadoke, the hunting attorney, ironically is one of these characters who would call ‘nannie state’, yet say ‘unimportant’ walrus was shot for human safety. …! All people had to do was leave Freya alone! #Gmb.’
Someone else weighed: “A hunting lawyer who finds animals ‘inconsistent’, quelle surprise 🙄 #GMB #FreyaTheWalrus.”
#GMB Diggory Hadoke reasons that we should rightfully kill any animal that ever poses a threat to humans. Simply because, even accidentally, they can hurt someone. We have to do better than Diggory, this level of consciousness is deadly to the planet,” added another.
One viewer asked, ‘Why is Diggory Hadoke being platformed? Is this really the best person they could find to defend the Norwegian government? #Gmb.’
Last week, Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries warned the public to keep their distance after reports of people swimming with the walrus, throwing objects at her and getting dangerously close to pose for photos.
Ultimately, the board made the decision to euthanize Freya after a photo surfaced of her surrounded by a crowd, including several children.
“The decision to euthanize the walrus has been made based on an overall assessment of the ongoing threat to human security,” Frank Bakke-Jensen, the director-general of Norway’s Directorate for Fisheries, said in a statement.
Good Morning Britain is broadcast on weekdays from 6pm on ITV.
